Buying a Water Filter For Better Tasting Coffee

!±8± Buying a Water Filter For Better Tasting Coffee

I've done a lot of things to improve the taste of my coffee. I bought a coffee grinder and started grinding coffee beans myself to get the freshest taste. I bought airtight storage containers to keep those beans fresh. But the single way I improved my coffee was installing a water filter. Yes, it's the attachment to my faucet that made my coffee go from good, to excellent.

The problem was that I have horrible water, it's hard and leaves dingy calcium stains on my glasses and silverware. I wouldn't drink water from the tap, but that didn't stop me from using it to make my coffee in the morning. The problem is that coffee can absorb any and all flavors or odors that it comes in contact with, including minerals in your water and even the chlorine that many cities use to purify your water.

It wasn't too long ago, that I purchased my water filter. I debated between a filter and buying bottle water, but I decided to go with the water filter because it's more environmentally friendly than using bottles that are thrown into the trash or need to be recycled.

To filter my water, I bought a Culligan Water Filter (FM-15A), you can find it on Amazon and similar stores for .95. It looked simple and price was right.

The very next pot of coffee, I could taste an improvement. The taste of the coffee was fresher and more smooth. Overall, my water tasted better, looked cleaner and got rid of the hard water odor.

According to the packaging, it reduces chlorine taste and odor, custs back on sediments, lead, cysts and a whole bunch of other nasty sounding things.

The filter was simple to install, even for a non-handyman like me. I had it setup and running in just a few minutes.

The only drawback is that the water filter reduced the pressure. At first it was annoying, but now I've learned to do other parts of the coffee prep while the coffee pot is filling up with water. I have enough time to put in the filter and get my coffee ready to grind. It's worth the wait for better tasting coffee.

I debated getting a Brita pitcher, but I'm very satisfied with my decision. I've had Britas in the past and the water tastes better via the filter.

What Can I Drink on the Candida Diet?

!±8± What Can I Drink on the Candida Diet?

The candida diet is the primary course of treatment for a medical condition known as candidiasis. Candidiasis is characterized by an overgrowth of Candida albicans in the intestinal system which releases toxins into the body and eventually causes ill health. The candida diet eliminates certain foods and ingredients thought to exacerbate this condition. These eliminated foods feed Candida albicans thereby encouraging it to grow and multiply. As long as the candida albicans has an abundant food supply it will continues to wreak havoc on the body. Sugar, processed foods, dairy, preservatives, vinegar, glutinous grains and even fruit initially, are all prohibited on the candida diet. With so many foods and ingredients eliminated many feel frustrated trying to actually find things that they can still enjoy eating and drinking on the diet.

Since all types of sugar are eliminated on the candida diet figuring out what to drink on the diet may be a difficult task. Many of us are used to drinking soda, fruit juice, ice tea and other sugar laden drinks and these are often hard for candida dieters to completely give up. Additionally, many of us who have tried other diets may be appalled to find out that the diet soda and "light" varieties of juice that we relied so heavily on are no longer allowed on the candida diet as these contain artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose have been found to feed candida in the same manner as regular sugar and there are other health concerns regarding use of these sweeteners. Old habits die hard though, so to make this transition a little easier it is a good idea to identify what beverages are okay to drink on the candida diet.

Water is the best choice for a healthy diet, not just the candida diet. The human body is made up of about 70% water. Water is a vital component of our organs and tissues and we need the proper intake of water to ensure optimal functioning of the body. When we do not get enough water the body steals it from the organs and tissues and this is when symptoms of dehydration occur. Symptoms of dehydration can include fatigue, constipation, headaches, weakness and nausea. Keeping the body properly hydrated with water is also a good idea when trying to overcome candidiasis as it will help to flush toxins out of the body. Most candida diet guidelines suggest not drinking tap water because of the possible toxins it contains but buying a water filtration pitcher such as Brita can help reduce the toxins in tap water. You can also purchase bottled spring or purified water if you prefer. It may seem like drinking water is boring but it need not be with options such as seltzer and sparkling mineral water. Try adding lemon or lime slices to seltzer or sparkling mineral water and you will feel like you are out enjoying a cocktail.

Herbal Tea may be an option for some on the candida diet. Most candida diet guidelines recommend staying away from both tea and coffee because of caffeine and possible mold contamination of tea leaves but many candida dieters have found that they can tolerate herbal teas. Green tea is a great choice as it provides antioxidants which protect against free radical damage. Pau d'Arco is another herbal tea made from the bark of a tree indigenous to the rain forest. The tea appears to have some medicinal benefits and has helped many candidiasis sufferers. You can use stevia, a natural plant sweetener tolerated by most on the candida diet to sweeten your herbal teas and then serve them hot or cold.

Natural Depression Remedy: No Drugs, 5 Powerful Tips!

!±8± Natural Depression Remedy: No Drugs, 5 Powerful Tips!

Depression affects somewhere around 20 million people each year the United States, or roughly 9% of the adult population. Depression is taking its toll among teens, and even children. as well. Approximately 13% of teens have clinical levels of depression, and with children in the U.S., depression is the #1 mental disorder. Theories on the causes of depression range from stress, to food additives, drug interactions, chemical imbalances, air pollution, economic factors, and many others.

Typical treatments for depression involve administering antidepressants, which brings along with it side effects and other health considerations. Consequently, more and more people are looking for other ways to reduce or get rid of depression altogether. So, here are some simple things you can do that don't require drugs or strange therapies:

Natural Depression Remedy #1 Get some sunlight! Sunlight increases the brain levels of serotonin, our happy chemical. Just 15 minutes a day can make a real difference. Make sure your kids get a little sunlight, too-they, like so many Americans, are now spending upwards of 90% of their time indoors, getting very little of the sunlight we all need for optimum physical and mental health.

Natural Depression Remedy #2 Breathe deeply outside! The amount of oxygen present in outside air is generally higher than what you are breathing inside your home or office. So when you're feeling depressed, go outside and breathe deeply---in for 8 counts, out for 10 counts. This will saturate the blood (and the brain) with oxygen. More oxygen to the brain = more energy, alertness, less of that 'tired' feeling. Even during the winter months, if weather conditions aren't unbearable, go outside and do something for 15 minutes and breathe. It can really make a difference in how you feel the rest of your day.

Natural Depression Remedy #3 Consider the Power of Negative Ions University studies have shown that negative ions can relieve feelings of depression about as well as antidepressants! Oh really? Yes. Negative ions are naturally produced in nature by sunlight, lightning, waves crashing on the beach, which cause air molecules to break apart, releasing 'negative ions' or atoms with an overall negative charge. Ever feel refreshed when walking on the beach near the water, or after opening a window right after a thunderstorm? It's the negative ions in the air!

Negative ions increase oxygen to the brain, and as we said earlier, more oxygen to the brain means you're going to feel better. Now, we don't want an ozone generator, as ozone has been proven to be harmful. Many of the better air purifiers use healthy negative ions, such as OH- ions that will do the job nicely without any known side effects.

PS: Most people are unaware that air conditioning removes healthy negative ions, and this accounts for a lot of the occasions where we feel 'sluggish', tired, 'cranky' while indoors. In fact, the air in most homes and offices registers a 'zero' on the negative ion scale, so it's no wonder we're often cranky at work! LOL!

Natural Depression Remedy #4 Consider an air purifier A quality air purifier with a true HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter, and activated carbon can remove elements floating around in your air-dust, pet dander, dust mites, chemicals, mold spores, bacteria & viruses, etc. Many people do not realize that they begin to feel depressed as a result of not feeling very well. Sometimes just feeling sluggish or tired can lead to a overall 'depressed' feeling. And many times, the airborne particles, chemicals, and other toxins in the home / office are the culprits! This part of the reason that we generally feel better outside in the fresh air!

Natural Depression Remedy #5 Drink more purified water Many people do not realize that drinking water actually puts oxygen into your cells, thereby increasing the amount of oxygen going to the brain. So get a good filter (even a Brita pitcher from Walmart will work) and drink your 8, 8 oz cups or 4, 16 oz glasses a day-it can improve your mood!

Hopefully these tips will help you and your family live better and feel stronger!

To Your Health!

Tips For Purchasing a Brita Water Filter

!±8± Tips For Purchasing a Brita Water Filter

Brita Water Filters are useful for producing cleaner and safer water, but do they eliminate or reduce the contaminants in your water? Though these filters are effective in removing some impurities from tap water, they may not be productive in removing other toxins commonly found in our water supplies.

In an assessment the Environment Working Group (EWG) completed across the U.S., water suppliers in 43 states detected 260 contaminants in their water. Of these contaminants, 141 of them are unregulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Some of the regulated impurities include chlorine, lead, trihalomethanes (THMs), and VOCs.

Brita water filters remove chlorine and lead, but according to one comparison, their faucet and pitcher filters do not remove THMs or VOCs. But with so many comparisons floating around, it is difficult to determine fact from fiction. The following tips should help make shopping for your water filter easier.

Research the company's web site to see if they have a performance data sheet (PDS) on the water filter. If a PDS does not exist on the filter, then take this as a sign that the filter does not meet certain standards. Any company that claims that their unit can remove all contaminants in your water but that does not offer a PDS to back up that claim is probably giving you bogus information. If the unit is packaged with a PDS, check it to see if it is certified to remove THMs or VOCs in addition to chlorine and lead. If the unit is not certified to remove these two types of contaminants, don't waste your money. THMs and VOCs are very common, harmful impurities often found in drinking water, and they can lead to cancer and other health-related problems. Investigate the company's web site to learn about the technology used in their filtration systems. Also, find out whether or not the filtration system retains the natural minerals found in tap water. Retaining the minerals in tap water is important because our bodies require them for optimal health. Stripping the minerals away from drinking water reduces the alkalinity, resulting to an acidic state. Therefore, any high-quality water filter employs technology designed to keep minerals in the water during the filtration phase. Find out how often you will need to change the filter cartridge for the unit to perform effectively. A unit requiring frequent changes can become costly and inconvenient. Also, research indicates that people are NOT likely to change cartridges on schedule in filters requiring frequent changes, but they are likely to change cartridges that do not require frequent changes. Find out if the unit employs a pre-filtering stage. A filter with a pre-filtering stage removes debris such as sediment from the water, thus preventing its flow from slowing down. Without a pre-filtering stage, the unit is not as effective in reducing impurities since pores can become clogged with debris.

So, if you are considering a Brita water filter or any other filter, please follow these guidelines first. Following these tips can help you make an educated decision in protecting your water quality and your health for many years to come.
